Always a highlight of the evening, children of the Day Home sang for us

In February we gathered for Saint Vincent’s Day Home’s Annual Children’s Choice Awards Dinner to honor those who have made a significant difference in the lives of children and their families. Held at Scott’s Seafood Restaurant in Jack London Square, the evening’s Master of Ceremonies duties were deftly handled by multitalented comedian, writer and KGO radio personality Brian Copeland. Brian kept the event lively and our Day Home children gave us the gift of song at this wonderful night that honored three very special people: Kimberly Briggs, Hon. Lois Haight Herrington and Mary MacPherson.

Kim Briggs was drawn to the Day Home because of her twin passions: justice and children, two causes to which she has devoted herself. As an Assistant United States Attorney and member of our Board of Directors, she is a constant source of inspiration, enthusiasm and creativity. Whenever there's a job to be done Kim is among the first to volunteer and among the last to leave. We are endlessly impressed by her kind and caring spirit that infuses everything she does. Her dedication to helping those in need, to sustaining the hope of those who struggle, and to securing justice for the victimized is an inspiration to us all.

Mary MacPherson has been a vital part of the Day Home for more than 20 years, providing testing and speech therapy to our children in order to help them build the language foundation they need for lifelong learning. Because most parents either cannot afford or are unable to take time off work to bring their child to her, Mary comes to us. Every child who works with Mary looks forward to seeing her; we see their beaming smiles every day when she congratulates them on a job well done. We honor Mary for so generously contributing the time, wisdom, patience and energy that she puts into working with our children, their parents and teachers.

Hon. Lois Haight Herrington is a woman who puts her heart and her resources into helping forgotten and abused children. As the presiding judge of the Contra Costa County Juvenile Court she encounters the harsh reality of children taken into the foster care system. These young people face obstacles few of us could hope to surmount. When they “age out” of the system, many have nowhere to go, most do not finish high school and few go on to college. Using her own funds, Judge Haight has established a foundation that gives grants to these young survivors so that they can find a place to live, continue their schooling and make the transition from tragic childhood to a brighter future. She is a hero to the many whom she encourages, protects and empowers.
