Family Literacy Program
The Day Home Welcomes New Program Co-Directors Amy Prevedel and Shree Ram
June 2005 In our continuing efforts to Bridge the Digital Divide, the Day Home welcomes new Family Learning Program Co-Directors Amy Prevedel and Shree Ram. Amy and Shree joined this exciting effort during the summer and are already off and running with the program.
Both Amy and Shree come to the Day Home with extensive experience in the field of family learning and literacy. Amy has focused on library-based adult and family literacy programs for the past 10 years, and has worked on projects with the National Institute of Literacy and the Center for Family Literacy. She holds a Masters in Adult Education, and most recently coordinated The Berkeley Reads program at the public library (Berkeley adult literacy program). Shree holds a Masters degree in Education and is particularly interested in education and social services in urban, under-resourced communities. Shree has a wealth of experience in adult literacy and new program implementation. She worked with Amy at the Blue Gargoyle Adult Learning Program in Chicago, ultimately assuming directorship of the program. Laying the Groundwork for Family Literacy To get things moving, parents and adults were surveyed about what they want in the areas of reading, writing, computer, math skills, and parenting topics. Teachers were also interviewed to get their observations on what types of programs might be most useful to our parents. This direct feedback will help Amy and Shree develop and deliver literacy programs tailored to our parents’ needs. Already, the program has delivered two workshops: a family music workshop, and an Internet workshop designed for adults who have very little experience accessing the web. As the program evolves, Amy and Shree will be looking to identify resources and opportunities in the community that complement the Day Home’s services. They also have plans to extend our services to programs such as Second Start, the Oakland Public Library’s Adult Literacy program. We’re thrilled to have Amy and Shree heading up this crucial program, which is made possible via our partnership with Chevron Corporation. Watch our website for news on our Family Literacy Program. |
